Abstract

The ability to read the Qur’an correctly is a fundamental competency for students in Islamic primary education, yet differences in initial abilities and limited effective learning approaches often become obstacles. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Sidogiri Qur’ani Method to improve students’ Qur’an reading skills through a drill-and-practice approach at MI Al Jawahir, and to identify the challenges encountered and the resulting learning outcomes. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a field research approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving students, teachers, and the program coordinator, and were validated using source and technique triangulation. The findings reveal that the implementation of the Sidogiri Qur’ani Method was carried out systematically and progressively, beginning with the introduction of hijaiyah letters and progressing to the application of tajwid rules through repetitive, structured exercises. The integration of the drill-and-practice approach significantly enhanced students’ reading abilities, as reflected in improved fluency, accuracy, and understanding of tajwid and makhraj. However, several challenges were identified, including limited instructional time, variations in students’ initial competencies, insufficient learning facilities, and a lack of a supportive Qur’anic environment at home. In conclusion, the Sidogiri Qur’ani Method, combined with drill and practice, is an effective and applicable learning strategy for improving the quality of Qur’an reading among elementary-level students.
